Our walking food tour combines tasty food tasting, food history, politics, and culture.
It begins with a light breakfast and unforgettable Cretan beverage. Since Arabs, Jews, Venetians, Ottomans, Greeks from Asia Minor, and immigrants have passed through Chania, adding their flavors to the local cuisine, we will follow their trail. We will experience a multi-sensory food event and delectable delicacies from one-of-a-kind specialty food shops while enjoying the opportunity to better understand the culinary history of the city and how the locals eat.
Our walk ends with a dive into the distant past. We will visit the archaeological museum of Chania or an archaeological site to talk about Minoan foods and cooking methods. We will then visit a local taverna where will have a chance to enjoy a short lesson in ancient cooking. We will be also treated to home-baked bread, made according to Byzantine baking method- and other fine delicacies of historic Cretan gastronomy.
The tour is available on Tuesday and Saturday.
It is also offered upon request, if time permits.

Chania is the second biggest city in Crete and has been continuously inhabited since 4000 B.C.! According to the legend, it was one of the three cities that were founded on Crete by King Minos.
Chania has a rich culture and an interesting history. Minoans, Mycenaeans, Dorians, Classical and Hellenistic Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians, Ottomans, Jews, Greek refugees from Asia Minor and Cretans created an amalgam of multiple cultural influences.
The long history of Chania is paramount to understand its rich food culture.

Mariana was a wondeful host. I had the good fortune of having a private tour. I loved how she provided an insight into Cretan life/history while sampling a large variety of food. I would have enjoyed seeing the farmer's market with her but this occurred only on Saturdays and was not suitable for my schedule. She sent me additional inforrmation with recommendations on sites and restaurants that we visited and thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommend!!!!
We had a wonderful time on our tour with Mariana. Not is her knowledge of food, best locals and local preparation techniques fascinating, but her background in the history and culture of the island provided an additional layer of understanding and interest to everything we were eating. Mariana is very knowledgeable and took us to some fantastic spots. We ate very well! She even gave us the best recommendation for a restaurant we tried on another island after leaving Crete. We would absolutely recommend this tour with Mariana. Thank you!!!
We had a wonderful time touring with Mariana. It was amazing to be able to learn about Chania from an experimental archeologist and food historian. We loved being able to try the home-made breads that Mariana baked using ancient methods. After the tour, Mariana gave us fantastic recommendations for things to do during the rest of our stay. Overall, this was a great experience.
I took the 'Eating in ancient Greece' cooking class. It was a cooking lesson, a history lesson and a meal all in one! I enjoyed it very much. I was by myself but Mariana had me group with four other lovely people and we learned so many interesting things and cooked and laughed. A very interesting class by an experimental archaeologist who is an Gourmand award - winning author as well. Food was great.
I’m thoroughly fascinated with Mariana's cooking courses. I took two of them and I enjoyed the entire process, from mixing historically-appropriate ingredients and cooking over an open fire to using replicas of historic equipment and tools. Mariana is extremely generous with her knowledge and responded to every question in such a warm and nuturing way!
