Join me for an exciting session with a Market Tour, followed by Cooking and Eating Thailand’s national dish: authentic Pad Thai!
We will first meet at BTS Bangwa station and take a taxi to the wet market in the area to get fresh ingredients for Pad Thai. This also allows you to explore what the local wet market in Thailand is like.
After getting all the ingredients and exploring the market, we head to my condominium to start preparing Pad Thai.
Market Tour + Cooking + Eating = about 4.30 hours (Lunch OR Dinner)
*The place will be changed to my condominium instead of a house as in the pictures shown.
** I have a cat at my place, do take note in case you are allergic.
Do let me know if you'd like to have a special request or any dietary restriction, allergy beforehand, and I’ll do my best to accommodate it.
Taling Chan is an old district back when there was Thonburi Province. Now Thonburi is merged into Bangkok. In 1998, part of the district was split into a new Thawi Watthana District. Historically, much of the area was used as orchards, many of those remain there today.
In the close area, there is the Taling Chan Floating Market which is on the canal Khlong Chak Phra Canal in front of the district office. It is open only on weekends from about 08:30 to 16:00.
The Orchard produces such as fruits, and vegetables, and there is also fish sold from boats.
There is a live traditional Thai music performance from 11:00 to 14:00. The idea for the floating market here was initiated by Chamlong Srimuang in 1987 to honour King Bhumibol's 60th birthday.
This is a new attraction since the floating markets, an old way of life of the Thai people, had vanished entirely from Bangkok for quite a long time.
I am a full time lecturer in a local university teaching film. I love cooking and I cook at home
We met Namwan and her husband at a local wet market near their home and they explain the ingredients of the Pad Thai to us. Even as a Thai myself, I was not familiar with many ingredients that Namwan picked up so market trip was eye opening for me as well! After we made our way back to their home, we get ready and prepare to make the dish. As my friend and I do not cook at home, we were slow with our cutting but Namwan was very patient and showed us step by step. Eventhough I am not a big fan of Pad Thai, I must say that the Pad Thai that we made turned out hearty and delicious! The rice noodles are not too soggy or too and the balance of sweet, savoury and sour (from a squeeze of lime was perfect!). I also liked the fact that it was not too oily like the ones in most of eateries in Bangkok as well. Namwan may not be a professional chef but she really has a passion for cooking, using her free time to come up with various homecooked recipes!
