Looking to do what the Romans do? Then do not miss my exclusive tour of one of the most fascinating Roman neighbourhoods: Testaccio.
Testaccio is sort of the real birthplace of Roman food. It is not well-known to tourists, but it is where the locals hangout, and travellers who discover it find it a most interesting and "authentic" destination. In fact, this is where most Romans actually shop and go about their daily lives. So if you want to see have a taste of the real local way of life, this is a must-do.
In Testaccio, you get to experience the most authentic side of contemporary Rome. I will bring you to walk together and explore for a few hours, and enjoy just being among many friendly locals who are merchants at this market. In this food tour, we will visit a legendary gourmet deli shop, and we will also stop in the most popular stands at the colorful Testaccio local market. To top it all off, we will also visit a typical wine cellar, where you get to have a closer encounter with the heart of Italian cuisines: our wines.
In this food tour, I will also bring you to visit the ancient slaughterhouse, which has now, interestingly, been transformed to a modern museum, and also the picturesque artists’ cemetery.
Testaccio Market, or what is known as Mercato di Testaccio among locals, is a classic Roman neighbourhood. What used to be old covered stalls in Piazza Testaccio has shifted and transformed to a new bright building near to the MACRO museum, while still maintaining the energetic atmosphere.
In the Testaccio Market you can find a wide range of things: from an artisanal house furnishing, to a horse butcher. As such, this would be a perfect stop for souvenir shopping.
BITES OF ROME was started by my passion in good, healthy and fair food. Born and raised in Rome, I
We took a tour of Testaccio with Jennifer today. We had a very enjoyable time walking in the neighborhood with her, learning about Testaccio and then having all kinds of delicious eats at the Testaccio Market. Jennifer is a very knowledgeable and lovely young lady! We hope to stay in contact with her and visit with her again when we return to Rome!
My wife and I recently met up in Rome with friends from Canada for my 60th birthday. We were busy durning the day, but Do Eat Better was willing to work with us to develop an evening tour of Testaccio, Tarstevere, and the Jewish Ghetto. Jennifer was extremely helpful and accommodating. Our tour guide Irene couldn't have been better... passionate about Roman food and a walking encyclopedia about its origins and the history of the area. The food stops were true culinary gems, and the proprietors of each were so friendly and welcoming.
Great 4 hour tour eating and drinking around the Testaccio area of Rome. We were the only people on the tour so had a private guide. Ate food that we would never have tried and in an area that wasn't touristy. Jennifer was lovely and told us many facts both about the area and about the food. Would highly recommend this tour if you enjoy eating!
I took this tour with my family and enjoyed every minute! This was definitely one the best things we did in Rome. Jennifer, the guide, is very knowledgeable and was able to provide an interesting and engaging tour for both my husband and I and our two children as well! My two sons have great fun. While we were tasting suppli in the main square of Testaccio, they were playing in the garden with other italian children, it was a great experience for them! The food was amazing and we really felt like we were not only experiencing great food, but were also able to learn a lot about the Italian culture as well.
