Peranakan culture is a hybrid of Chinese, Malay and Western cultures - a truly iconic representation of the cultural melting pot that Singapore is. The Peranakan cuisine is very much similar. Many traditional Peranakan dishes are characterised by their robust flavours and aromatic rempahs (spice pastes). For a truly memorable & uniquely Singaporean food experience, join in for a hands-on cooking experience with our true blue Peranakan hosts.
You will get to try your hand at pounding the spice paste (or rempah) with a traditional pestle and mortar. While making the spices from scratch, pick up the techniques on what makes a good laksa or Nyonya curry - nuggets of information that have been passed down the generations. You will also have fun with kueh making. Kuehs are delicious and colourful Nyonya desserts. You may be rolling out dough for ondeh ondeh and filling it up with delicious gula Melaka (that is meant to burst in your mouth when you eat it) or flipping paper-thin pandan-scented crepe for the kueh dadar.
Minimum 4 people needed for the class. For classes with 3 or less people, alternative rates apply - please message to enquire.
All equipment and ingredients provided, participants will get to sit down and enjoy the food they helped prepare.
Our local chefs are located all around Singapore, in easily accessible locations. Let us know if you have any location preferences and we will be able to match you to our local hosts in those areas.
It was a nice experience learning from Elizabeth. She's friendly and very good at peranakan cooking and kueh making. All of us in the group enjoyed and love her teaching. Highly recommended!
Elizabeth is a charming lady and hostess who makes you feel right at home in her beautiful Peranakan abode. I usually don't eat kueh's outside because they have artifical flavourings and too much sugar but Elizabeth's creations blew my mind! She uses only natural pandan extracts from her own plant, lesser sugar in every recipe. We made tonnes in quantity but they barely lasted by the time I got home since they were SO delish!
Our experience at our host's Sophia and Joseph's home was incredible. Scott and I were both getting tired after a long day of touring. Sophia's energy perked us right back to life; she and her husband have such a vibrance and passion for living which is infectious. The food was delicious. She truly went above and beyond and exceeded al expectations. Everything from the table settings, location in her yard, food, and dessert were incredible and level of spice was perfect. We loved hearing about their life and family. It was truly a huge highlight of our time in Singapore!
Came across this BonAppetour experience through Facebook and thought it would be a good way to spice up my stay in Singapore. Never would I have thought that I took that many steps during this challenge (tracked it with my fitbit), which motivated me a lot. Really a different form of exercising & I enjoyed it very much. None of the challenges were tough, but none of them were easy either - making it, I'd say, suitable for all ages and even families as well. This would've been the highlight of my vacation yet! Would highly recommend this to everyone!
Very interestibg tour. I tried dishes that were quite good but the kinds I never would've ventured alone without explanation. Not only did I learn about the particulars of the inteoduced food but also got some insight about the areas we were visiting. The stalls indeed were quite popular as the line was quite long at each stall. It would've been better if the food wasn't sitting there for a bit and we wouldn't have minded to wait maybe 5 min or so once we got to each stall. but I can also understand it would be difficult to time when the queue was not predictable. Angela, the tour guide, was so great as she was very experienced in handling customers and insightful in Singaporean history. I recommend this tour to those who are new to Singapore or Singaporean cuisine. Be sure you go on an empty stomach!!
I first learned about BonAppetour on Instagram. Their ad popped up on my feed and it got me curious. My family and I were very keen on trying out the Michelin star hawkers here in Singapore but we never have the time to cue up (as waiting could take up to hours and that doesn't guarantee you getting a meal as these hawkers get soldout early). Their food tour was the perfect opportunity for us to try these famous meals. So without knowing what to expect, I booked a tour for us. Booking was easy as it was confirmed quickly by the host. I had a few questions and he answered some. As the tour was approaching, My husband and I started to get worried as they weren't replying nor contacting us as to where or how we should meet. We were starting to think that it might be a fraud. Fortunately, on the morning before the tour, we decided to contact someone from BonAppetour's website. We got a response and finally was able to breathe properly as it was a legit tour. We met our guide at Lavender station and started our tour. It was a great experience for all of us. BonAppetour even provided a small slice of cake and sang a birthday song for our daughter's birthday. Good attention to details as I've mentioned prior that we were celebrating her birthday. Overall, the small hiccup in the beginning was okay as the whole experience made up for it. It was very liberating experiencing Singapore culture at its finest. Thanks, BonAppetour!
