ABOUT THEEXPERIENCE

Experience Tokyo’s bustling culinary underbelly on this 3-hour Tokyo food tour through three very famous and must see places in Tokyo!

ABOUT THELOCATION

Starting off in Yurakucho and ending in Shimbashi, your guide will show you the sights, sounds, and most importantly, tastes of Tokyo most tourists do not get to experience. Visit Gado Shita, a lively restaurant district built up under the brick arches beneath the elevated train tracks. Step into the narrow streets of the red lanterns and neon signs, so called yokocho alleys, where you can find yourself back in the 70s of Japan. In such exotic and retro ambience of the Showa period times, you’ll see local izakayas mostly frequented by locals. You’ll enjoy 2 Japanese Skewers, feshy caught sashimi, grilled beef and tamagoyaki ( Japanese Egg roll).
The second stop is Fish Cakes from the Kagoshima prefecture. Learn about this amazing local delicacy that locals really love.

Continuing in Ginza, explore some very interesting food spots where you can find a $400 USD melon, and explore the amazing food floor in the B1 floor in an iconic department store. Discover some traditionally and beautifully arranged desserts in this “Depachika” and see the famous landmarks of Tokyo’s most expensive real estate area! Soon after we will go to a restaurant where we will sample 6 or more regional food from the south of Japan, Miyazaki. You will also get to experience some amazing seasonal dishes at this place.

I had an amazing experience with my host Naoko-sensei. She was patient, sincere, and knew so much about the Japanese culture and cuisine, that I learnt so much about Tokyo in this 3 hour session than I had expected. It was my first time learning to make sushi, and Naoko-sensei made the whole experience so much fun - she saved our Maki sushi from breaking apart with her skilled fingers, while encouraging us and making us feel so accomplished at the same time. By the end of the lesson, Naoki Sensei had us feeling like we too could become sushi chefs! She told us interesting secrets about the ingredients used in the Japanese cuisine, and how they affect the final taste. At the end of the session, we sat down to enjoy the fruits of our labor - the sushi. Over lunch, Naoko-sensei told us about her childhood, her family, and we exchanged travel stories - the conversations over delicious Japanese food made us feel like we had made a friend in a new city. Many thanks to Anne from Arigato for giving us this experience - a little a piece of Tokyo which we were allowed to bring home to our family and friends!
