Are you a foodie like us? Interested to experience a local market and treat yourself to a sensory adventure of sights, smells, sounds and taste? Then we invite you to shop and cook like an Italian with us!
We will start the day with a visit to a famous neighbourhood fresh market beloved by Prati residents and beyond, Mercato Trionfale. Learn about the history behind this market, which was recently restored to its current grounds. Over 200 stands await you, featuring fresh and dried fruit, vegetables, artisanal pasta, extra-virgin olive oils, wine, cheeses, fresh seafood, meats and more. We will be visiting some of our favourite vendors that come as far as Puglia to sell their products. We will get to see, smell, touch, sample and discover the fresh produce that are known ingredients of Matteo's beloved Italian cuisine. We will also share tips on certain ingredients that are very unique to our country, depending on their seasonal availability. At the market, you may purchase your own Italian products to take home. Vacuum-sealing option is available for most of the cheeses and cured meats.
After grocery-shopping, we will then walk back home, where we will teach you some of the recipes Matteo inherited from his grandmother. Interested to learn how to make fresh pasta from scratch? What about tiramisu? The cooking class will be hands-on, and you'll be treated to a personal and intimate walk down memory lane as Matteo recreates some of his favourite childhood dishes, be it pasta all'amatriciana or pollo ai peperoni.
We will then enjoy the fruit of our labour, and dine together in the comfort of our living room or garden.
Expect a day filled with fun, laughter and a love for living life!
Central location in Prati close to metro A. Who knows... You might just be treated to live music by Matteo!
My name is Nadia. I am a professional actor with more than 20 years of industry exprerience. I was
I was traveling to Rome for a family vacation over the US Thanksgiving Holiday. When I travel, I like to try to experience the city like a local would. I'm so happy I came across the Carlettos! They are the perfect couple to host; very sweet, welcoming, and knowledgable people. The class started with a tour of and shopping at a local market for the ingredients of the day's menu. They have established relationships with several of the vendors at the market, which made for a more warm and welcoming experience. Their apartment was not far away from the market. It was a cozy apt that displayed their love for music and culture (I live in NYC in what feels like a closet at times, so their apartment was large to my standards). We made the pasta from hand and learned about the various flours and foods used to make dishes. It was really fun! Oh, and the wine was GREAT! We stayed a little longer than the timeframe noted but they were so gracious to entertain us. They were even helpful towards the end of our stay in Rome when looking for a pharmacy in the area. A lovely couple that I would definitely book again. Oh, and the desert was amazing - it was kind of like a cheesecake topped with a fruit I've never had but wish was back in the States - a grape strawberry. YUM!
We booked the market tour and the cooking class with Nadia and Matteo. We loved the market tour and exploring the various stands, and learning how to cook with the wonderful produce afterwards as well. Despite the different age ranges in our group (we brought our 13 year old cousin along) everyone had great fun. Nadia and Matteo were always kind, knowledgeable and fun. It was the highlight of our trip to Rome. Thank you very much.
The Carettos took us first to some great markets and shops and teached us on how ingredients were made and why they chose them for the dishes. Then we learned some great dishes, some of which we chose by ourselves. They both speak English fluently and we had a great night with them as our companions!
