ABOUT THEEXPERIENCE

Experience all of culinary Germany in a beautiful dinner setting at Schöne Heimat in Berlin. Kit Schulte will cook and present fresh, seasonal, organic and traditional GERMAN FOOD dishes from the 16 states in an 9-12-course menu.

Germany has 16 states and in each of them one can find a unique dish or variations on common dishes. The influences of the neighboring countries are most visible in Germany's regional cuisine. Whereas the southwest of Germany is influenced by French cooking, the Rhine River region by foods in Belgium and the Netherlands. Bavaria being close to Austria and loves all the Knödel and sausages and Schnitzel. Spätzle, Sauerkraut and Maultaschen are among the favorites in many southern states. The northwest of Germany proudly presents a variety of seafood dishes. And naturally, dishes from the eastern regions are infused by eastern flavors and other cultures due to the different political situation affecting agricultural diversity during the socialist era.

While the guests indulge the various discoveries, sitting together in a beautiful, typical Berlin dining room, they will also learn about the history of the dishes, how they have been influenced and how they are prepared.

This unique experience can be booked as a group minimum 8, maximum 10 persons. All beverages are included in the price.

ABOUT THEMENU

Courses are served partly on individual plates and on platters in family style. The dinner is accompanied with wine and beer pairings, presented by experts and producers. Kit is a great and experienced cook, but also has a talent for beautiful presentations and storytelling.

ABOUT THELOCATION

Schöneberg, centrally located in former West, is Berlin’s most colorful and multicultural district. Many film stars, authors, poets, and scientists have felt at home here – David Bowie and Iggy Pop, Albert Einstein, Hans Fallada, Klaus Kinski, Hildegard Knef, Else Lasker-Schüler, Rudolf Steiner, and Billy Wilder– to name a few. When John F. Kennedy visited Berlin in 1961, he made his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech at the Schöneberg Town Hall. Since the 1920s, Berliners have come to Schöneberg to dance and party, especially with Berlin’s gay and lesbian district located around Nollendorfplatz. To this day, innumerable restaurants, bars, cafés and clubs keep this tradition alive.

The Winterfeldtmarket in Schöneberg, located at the Winterfeldtplaza next to the St. Matthias Church is one of the best farmer's markets in Berlin. One can find produce of fresh, local organic and/or regional vegetables, fruits, fish and meats. On Saturdays with around 200 stalls present, you may discover rare ingredients like wild herbs, edible flowers, foraged mushrooms, wild game, as well as handcrafted condiments, household goods and wonderful freshly-made Turkish delicacies.

My fiancee and I like to take cooking classes when traveling. Kit's class was great. It was close to the market where we bought everything fresh, we learned some history, and all about the ingredients for what we were making. This was also German food, not Bavarian (pretzels, schnitzel, etc.) Her kitchen was beautiful and it was fun having a small, personal class. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a class.

Kit provided us with a wonderful culinary experience in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. An outstanding cook, hostess and conversationalist, Kit conveyed intricate knowledge of local, seasonal produce, products and ingredients. Her highly organized yet seemingly effortless guidance, in combination with her obviously well-honed skills, yielded a feast of nuanced flavors in sometimes surprising, delicious combinations, equally pleasing to the palate and the eye. Kit's passion and creativity served as a fantastic inspiration for the home cook. Attention to detail extended to interesting twists on freshly made non-alcoholic beverages as well as a lovely choice of wines to complement the dishes of the day. Plus, Kit's ability to spark and support children's enthusiasm for the culinary arts was a delight to behold. A most delicious slice of local culture.

My girlfriend and I were looking for an authentic Berlin cooking experience and we found it in Kit's market tour and cooking class! After visiting the market to pick up fresh meats, fruits and veggies, we returned to Kit's kitchen to prepare a delicious meal of wild herb tomato salad with figs and goat cheese, ‘Kohlrouladen’ (stuffed cabbage rolls)(both meat and vegetarian versions), and plum cake with whipped cream. Preparing it was half the fun and we enjoyed several glasses of sekt while we worked in the kitchen. The results were delicious and we enjoyed delightful conversation with our host. By the time we were done it seemed more like we had just made lunch and dined with a close friend than taken a cooking class. Cooking and dinning are a great way to experience a place and Kit's class was a high point of our trip to Berlin. Highly recommended.

It was with high expectations that I took Kit's market tour and cooking class. But even so, I was completely blown away by the experience, which turned out to be so much better than I had thought possible. She instantly made friends with everyone and took us away on a journey into the realm of food. She has so much to share about the specialty produce we saw at the Winterfeld farmer's market. The visit in the chocolate store was a revelation (and very hard to leave). We arrived in Kit's kitchen with what seemed to be an impossible variety of food which we then amazingly were able to turn into a gorgeous three course menu under her helpful and well organized guidance. The dishes were improvised around what we found on the market on that day, inspired by traditional german food heritage but interpreted by Kit in a fresh new way. The details like her home grown Lila Luzy chilies and the awesome german sparkling wine that she found in a small wine specialty shop were just perfect as well. Dinner was served in her nice and welcoming dining room underneath a green chandelier. Kit is a very warm and open host and most of all she's lots of fun. It was a unique and great Berlin experience to fondly remember for a very long time.
