Welcome to my home, where you will join me in preparing for a hearty meal and also got a chance to observe the process of making Cốm (Young green rice) which is not only the famous delicacy of my village, but also of Hà Nội.
Imagine going from the busy city to this serenity where you can listen to roosters crowing while making spring roll and frying Chả cốm with me and my mother.
Eat together and let me share with you about the stories of my family and the village I grew up in.
My home is located in Mễ Trì village, 20 mins drive from Hanoi center. The name literally means the "lake of rice", alluring to the well-known rice production of the area. Here we are famous for our green young rice and many other rice-based products. Fun Fact: the nearby Marriott Hotel is where US President Obama stayed in his visit to Hanoi, and he even visited our village to taste the green rice! Come and try it yourself!
I'm Hien which means always moving forward and always being happy. And I'm really into eating
Cherry is very friendly and kind. She has good English and we are able to communicate very well. We enjoyed the time at her home and she shared everything she knows with Vietnam. We love the sticky rice cake at home. It was VERY TASTY! Cherry was also helpful. She offered us a lot of advice and told us where to travel. Before we arrive Vietnam, we were very worried that we could not watch the Water Puppet Show. Cherry help us to call the theater and got the tickets for us. :D Thank you Cherry :D
It was an incredibly hot day in Hanoi, but entering the village where Hien lived relieved us from the heat immediately. It was fascinating seeing the process of making the green rice - I was really amazed by how the farmers work the rice from barely edible kernels to a tasty smooth product. Hien prepared all the ingredients needed to make fried spring rolls before we came, and we started rolling using rice paper while sitting on the floor. After that Hien and her mom fried the food while we helped arrange the table and cutlery. The food was great, especially the fried pork roll with green rice. Served with fish sauce, the pork was succulent, while the green rice melted in the mouth, combined to create a distinctive flavour of the village where they came from. Nicely served together with the dishes are bottles of Hanoi beer, which was light and refreshing. Highly recommended for those looking for a more countryside flavour to the normal local Vietnamese food!
