Beyond the Ruins: Tour Rome's Contemporary Architecture Scene & Lunch with Locals

Host Maria Laura & Donatella

$69.74 per guest

The Eternal City may be hailed for its antiquity, but it’s also home to a slew of modern, architectural masterpieces. Join a professional architect for a walk through the Contemporary Flaminio neighbourhood to explore Rome’s little-known, contemporary side. Then head back to our flat for a home-cooked lunch!

The tour starts in the Quartiere Flaminio, an area on the south bank of the River Tiber, right across from the Olympic Stadium. After breakfast in your guides’ favorite coffee shop, your paths will separate: you will be walking through this Roman district with a professional architect, getting the feel of every-day life in a non-touristy neighborhood.
You’ll go on to discover several important landmarks and hear all about their construction – past and present. Sites include: Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI Museum of Contemporary Art; Buro Happold’s Pedestrian Ponte della Musica; Renzo Piano’s Auditorium Parco della Musica; and more.
Afterwards, head back to Maria Laura and Amanda’s home for a classic Italian meal.

ITINERARY: Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI Museum of Contemporary Art; Buro Happold’s Pedestrian Ponte della Musica; Renzo Piano’s Auditorium Parco della Musica; and more.

Sample Menu: Appetizer of sundried tomatoes, olives, and breads; pasta alla gricia; meat-stuffed vegetables; tiramisu’; wine.

Your experience will take place in the modern and un-touristy Flaminio neighborhood, easily reachable from the Tram 2 from Piazzale Flaminio, while your lunch will be in a fabulous apartment with a view of the MAXXI museum.
From our flat, you can walk in 20 minutes to the Villa Borghese gardens, the National Gallery of Modern Art, and Piazza del Popolo with its famous church and shopping street Via del Corso. From there it is a short walk to the Spanish Steps, the Via Condotti and the Fontain of Trevi.

I had a great time at Maria Laura's dinner. In Rome on business I was fed-up of dining out alone in restaurants, and so decided to go along to this social dinner. The food was great (loved the wild-leaves known as "Cicoria", fried up with garlci and fresh olive oil!!), I met some interesting people form Europe and South America, and got to see a different part of the City. Maria Laura and Barbara are lovely, welcoming women, with a fun sense of humour, in a relaxed atmosphere. I would reccommend the experience to anyone who wants to really get a feel of Italy!

We joined the dinner party in September and had a great evening with fantastic italian food and drinks. Thanks a lot for the wonderful evening.
