ABOUT THEEXPERIENCE

Explore Germany’s rich culinary heritage of seasonal and regional vegetable, fish and meat dishes, fruit desserts, while learning about herbs, their healing powers, and the century-old tradition of organic gardening.

Join native German cook Kit Schulte on a culinary journey! Beginning in the morning, we’ll shop in the most famous farmers market in Berlin, the Winterfeldtmarket. You will enjoy delicious samples of Berlin’s local produce, shop farmers’ stalls for fresh organic greens, local fish and meats. Then just steps from the market you will arrive in Kit’s home kitchen to prepare and enjoy a typical German lunch dish, made with tasty, seasonal ingredients. Exploring regional nuances, as well as the influence of neighboring European cuisines, Kit will share her healthy take on traditional German cooking, including freshly prepared sausages, meat, cabbage and potatoes dishes.

Our team
Kit, founder and main host/cook
Kit has been growing, harvesting and cooking fresh, organic foods since she was a child. She was raised in the countryside near her father's trout farm, where she learned to clean and scale fish at age 8. In the summer and fall, there were grandma's vegetables and fruits, eaten fresh, and preserved and savored in winter. Once a year the family processed a whole pig for roasting and for aspic, and after a regular tradition with her father and his hunting friends. Rabbits and wild game were delicately prepared and served for the whole family.
Throughout her life Kit has been gathering friends and family around the table for delicious meals and good conversation, often lasting late into the night. Schöne Heimat shares this natural way of finding joy, meaning, and beauty in life with you, our extended family.
Why Schöne Heimat? There is no exact English translation. Literally, it means “beauty of home,” but the deeper resonance is 'home where your heart is'.

Inés, host and cook
Inés Lauber joined the team as of January 2018 and fills in for Kit occasionally. As a designer, she considers food her creative material of choice to express and realize her ideas. Inés interest lays in exploring the diversity of cuisines found around the world: the histories, traditions, preparation, rules of etiquette, myths, and possibilities which surround food culture. Experimenting with food and creating new recipes based on a healthy, modern lifestyle is something she is truly passionate about. Inés connects people through the international language of food and makes use of the power of interaction given by this incredible raw material.

On Wedensdays and Saturdays we will meet in the morning. On the way to Kit's home, we will stop at wonderful specialty shops, including chocolate and wine!

In Kit’s home kitchen, we will cook a typical seasonal three-course menu and discover a healthy and delicious take on German cuisine, with particular emphasis on regional nuances, the culinary influences from Italy and France, and Germany’s very special cultivation of herbs and their healing powers. The afternoon culminates as we enjoy our home-cooked meal, served with beer and wine available.

ABOUT THELOCATION

Schöneberg, centrally located in former West, is Berlin’s most colorful and multicultural district. Many film stars, authors, poets, and scientists have felt at home here – David Bowie and Iggy Pop, Albert Einstein, Hans Fallada, Klaus Kinski, Hildegard Knef, Else Lasker-Schüler, Rudolf Steiner, and Billy Wilder– to name a few. When John F. Kennedy visited Berlin in 1961, he made his famous “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech at the Schöneberg Town Hall. Since the 1920s, Berliners have come to Schöneberg to dance and party, especially with Berlin’s gay and lesbian district located around Nollendorfplatz. To this day, innumerable restaurants, bars, cafés and clubs keep this tradition alive.

The Winterfeldtmarket in Schöneberg, located at the Winterfeldtplaza next to the St. Matthias Church is one of the best farmer's markets in Berlin. One can find produce of fresh, local organic and/or regional vegetables, fruits, fish and meats. On Saturdays with around 200 stalls present, you may discover rare ingredients like wild herbs, edible flowers, foraged mushrooms, wild game, as well as handcrafted condiments, household goods and wonderful freshly-made Turkish delicacies.

Cooking with Kit was INCREDIBLE!! It was the highlight of our stay in Berlin. If you are looking for a very authentic experience with some of the best locals, look no further than this 5 star culinary class. Kit was extremely knowledgeable and an absolute delight to be around. She even sent a follow-up email with information about all the fresh ingredients we used as well as all of the recipes. Her assistant, Charlie, also deserves nothing but praises. She was so helpful in making sure we felt comfortable in their home and, more importantly, their kitchen. If I could give this 10 stars I would, HIGHLY highly recommend!!! Thank you Kit and Charlie!

Kit and Charlie were wonderful hosts! Kit knows a lot about her neighborhood and the history of Germany food. My coworkers and I absolutely loved the experience. She was even able to switch some of the recipe on the spot due to diet restrictions. Would definitely recommend her to anyone!

Explore culinary Germany with Kit is a must do if you are visiting this city or a local that wants to experience shopping at the market and the little shops on your way back to Kit's kitchen to cook. The enthusiasm and passion Kit has for cooking and the hands on with her in the kitchen preparing all the courses make for a culinary experience that you get to enjoy after 3 hours of preparation. The meal is out of this world and you were part of the preparation from start to finish. Thank you Kit for a lovely day with you and the meal was delicious. We can't wait to go home and prepare the soup, meatballs and apple strudel for our friends. I highly recommend Kit's culinary exploration of Berlin and Beyond.

My fiancee and I like to take cooking classes when traveling. Kit's class was great. It was close to the market where we bought everything fresh, we learned some history, and all about the ingredients for what we were making. This was also German food, not Bavarian (pretzels, schnitzel, etc.) Her kitchen was beautiful and it was fun having a small, personal class. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a class.

Kit provided us with a wonderful culinary experience in a warm and welcoming atmosphere. An outstanding cook, hostess and conversationalist, Kit conveyed intricate knowledge of local, seasonal produce, products and ingredients. Her highly organized yet seemingly effortless guidance, in combination with her obviously well-honed skills, yielded a feast of nuanced flavors in sometimes surprising, delicious combinations, equally pleasing to the palate and the eye. Kit's passion and creativity served as a fantastic inspiration for the home cook. Attention to detail extended to interesting twists on freshly made non-alcoholic beverages as well as a lovely choice of wines to complement the dishes of the day. Plus, Kit's ability to spark and support children's enthusiasm for the culinary arts was a delight to behold. A most delicious slice of local culture.

My girlfriend and I were looking for an authentic Berlin cooking experience and we found it in Kit's market tour and cooking class! After visiting the market to pick up fresh meats, fruits and veggies, we returned to Kit's kitchen to prepare a delicious meal of wild herb tomato salad with figs and goat cheese, ‘Kohlrouladen’ (stuffed cabbage rolls)(both meat and vegetarian versions), and plum cake with whipped cream. Preparing it was half the fun and we enjoyed several glasses of sekt while we worked in the kitchen. The results were delicious and we enjoyed delightful conversation with our host. By the time we were done it seemed more like we had just made lunch and dined with a close friend than taken a cooking class. Cooking and dinning are a great way to experience a place and Kit's class was a high point of our trip to Berlin. Highly recommended.

It was with high expectations that I took Kit's market tour and cooking class. But even so, I was completely blown away by the experience, which turned out to be so much better than I had thought possible. She instantly made friends with everyone and took us away on a journey into the realm of food. She has so much to share about the specialty produce we saw at the Winterfeld farmer's market. The visit in the chocolate store was a revelation (and very hard to leave). We arrived in Kit's kitchen with what seemed to be an impossible variety of food which we then amazingly were able to turn into a gorgeous three course menu under her helpful and well organized guidance. The dishes were improvised around what we found on the market on that day, inspired by traditional german food heritage but interpreted by Kit in a fresh new way. The details like her home grown Lila Luzy chilies and the awesome german sparkling wine that she found in a small wine specialty shop were just perfect as well. Dinner was served in her nice and welcoming dining room underneath a green chandelier. Kit is a very warm and open host and most of all she's lots of fun. It was a unique and great Berlin experience to fondly remember for a very long time.
