ABOUT THEEXPERIENCE

Would you like to learn how to make authentic Japanese home-cooked meals at a real local's home? Then come along to my class and learn to cook with me while enjoying a good conversation. I have hosted about 200 people from more than 20 different countries. We have shared stories and experiences about travel, cultures and food. Every meal was like a new learning experience.
All classes take place at our home where you can see what everyday life in Japan is like and try home-cooked meals. Our building is conveniently located in the tourist hub of Kyoto – within walking distance from Kinkakuji (the Golden Temple), Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and Hirano Jinja Shrine. Arashiyama is also easy to access.

ABOUT THEMENU

There are three menus as below. Each menu usually includes a welcome drink, a main dish, 2 side dishes, soup and a delicious Japanese dessert. Menu can be customized by requests.
There are vegetarian*/Muslim-friendly** options as well.
When you send a booking request, name one from the menus below. Then suitable side dishes and a dessert will be offered. Feel free to let me know if you have any allergies/intolerance/eating restrictions.

1. Chirashizushi menu

Chirashizushi, also known as scattered sushi served with colorful toppings, is cooked for celebrating special occasions such as festivals and family celebrations. It is also good for Obento, a fancy box lunch. Learn how to make it so that you can surprise your family and friends at your home with your own beautiful Chirashizushi.

Alternatively, we can make Sushi rolls instead of Chirashizushi.

2. Tofu variation menu

Tofu, also known as soy bean curd, are eaten in many ways in Japan, such as raw, stewed, fried, in soup, with other ingredients and even used in sweet dishes as well. Learn how to cook Tofu in several ways and find how differently delicious each dish tastes!

3. Customized by request: Okonomiyaki is currently the most often requested dish. Other examples of available main dish options are Kara-age chicken, Niku-jaga, Gyoza, Yakisoba and Japanese-style fish dish.

*’Vegetarian’ means no meat and no fish.

**‘Muslim-friendly’ means no meat and no alcoholic condiments. If meat is used, we use halal meat.

We had a wonderful time. We learned a lot about Japanese cookery and ingredients, and we greatly enjoyed eating the results of our efforts. The host speaks good English and is delightfully friendly.

This was a sushi making class. Not o my was it a fun and wonderful learning experience, but it was far more than that. We reviewed the techniques of making dashi from kelp and shaved bonito, and we were able to enjoy miso soup using the freshly brewed dashi. We learned to make a delicious carrot salad, chicken karaage, and last but not least, prepared ingredients (including tamagoyaki!!) for the rolling of our own maki sushi. Hairline made the experience rewarding as rolling maki sushi, for me, seemed daunting at first. With Haruko’s patience and coaching, we were able to be successful. We feasted upon all these wonderful flavors and dishes! We were treated to a most refreshing and delicious Matcha Pudding that Haruko had prepared for us. Tottemo oishii deshita!!! This was our second cooking experience with Haruko and my wife and I most heartily recommend Haruko’s cooking classes to all! Don’t miss this wonderful experience!

My 13 year old daughter and I took classes with Haruko. Apart from giving you the choice of menu, she adapts the dish to your dietary needs. Not only does she make you participate while she teaches, she also recommends what ingredients to use based on where you live and in our case, where to buy them. We not only learned to cook, we also learned protocol, traditions, culture, language and she answered all the questions we asked. Haruko is an extremely interesting and pleasant person and she demonstrates this from the moment you enter into her home. If you want to learn Japanese preparations and learn about Japanese people and culture, the best thing is to meet Haruko. We had a great experience!

My wife and I were thoroughly elated with our cooking experience with Haruko. Not only is Haruko most gracious and highly organized, but her recipes for the tofu menu that we choose were incredibly delicious and the most authentic “home-style” dishes! We learned so much from Haruko and we can’t wait to try and recreate her recipes when we’re return home from our travels. We highly encourage people to enroll in a class with Haruko. It is worth every minute! Arigato gozaimashita, Haruko! Aloha. A hui hou (until we meet again)! -Michael & Kim Springer from Hilo, Hawai’i

Amazing amazing experience! I really cannot say enough about how much fun AND educational this cooking lesson was for us. First of all she welcomes you into her lovely home, offers tea and a mini app of sorts I guess, delicious little savory cracker type things. We reviewed the menu and how things were gonna flow, donned our aprons and began the day! There was plenty to do and ample time to do it in, never did I feel rushed or hurried, it was all a very relaxed & enjoyable experience. My husband thought it would be just for me but we were both at work preparing an amazing meal!! Just the right amount of hands on vs. watching her to learn. The information given by Haruko was invaluable; things I never would have known except from a traditional cooking lesson such as this. I'm not a professional chef but I do LOVE to cook, try new foods, learn techniques that aren't southern (we fry everything here LOL)...so this was very rewarding for so many reasons. Also she asks if there is anything you are interested in specifically so that she can be prepared to teach you what YOU want to learn, so it's a very personalized experience. The food was amazing, I don't even feel like I have to say that but you should know, it was spectacular and plentiful! She speaks wonderful english so communication wasn't a problem at all. Truly enjoyable company and experience...we will definitely be returning to visit her again when we return. Maybe just to visit, who knows, but she is like visiting an old friend, instantly comfortable, relaxed and welcome. You will definitely enjoy this experience, do not hesitate to book!!
