ABOUT THEEXPERIENCE

Living in Barcelona is a luxury for all cook hobbyist. With the wide array of fresh ingredients offered in the wet market, we could pretty much cook up anything imaginable. This workshop will start off with a guided grocery shopping session, followed by a cooking class on any Spanish dish of your choice. The dishes to be cooked will be decided on the go during the market visit, guided by Yves, as a local expert and social chef.

ABOUT THEMENU

We will agree on a menu based on a starter, main dish and dessert or you will also have the option to choose a Tapas lunch/dinner, consisting on 4 tapas, and a dessert. All our elaborated dishes will be tasted in a group tableset and paired with Local Spanish and Catalan wines.

Get inspired by some examples on what you can expect on this hands-on cokking classs.

Starter’s examples:
Have you ever heard about Escalivada? It literally means “cooked in hot ashes” and it consists on cooking the three vegetables red pepper, onion and eggplant to get a smoke taste on them.

Discover how to elaborate the Catalan Romesco Sauce, traditionally used to eat the grilled calçots, a type of scallion or green onion. Main ingredients are: grilled tomatoes and garlic head, almonds, hazelnuts and ñora pepper meat.

Main Dish examples:
Do you know the Catalan Surf and Turf Dishes? Can you imagine a meatball stuffed with the cuttlefish tentacles and stewed in a fish broth? Chicken stew with crayfish and mussels could also easily happen in the Grandma’s Cooking Barcelona cookery lessons.

Further away from the worldwide well-known seafood paella, our grandmas may elaborate a black rice, colored with the ink of the cuttlefish and including seasonal artichokes. Or you may be part of the elaboration of a soupy rice with lobster.

Fish from the Mediterranean Sea: Imagine this recipes though step by step by a grandma:
Sole Fish with almond cream, Monkfish and Hake casserole, Cuttlefish with potatoes, …

Desserts examples:
Pears cooked in red wine with spices that will remind you to Christmas time: Cinnamon, clove, anise …
Three layer chocolate cake: don´t miss out the secret of this tempting dessert.

Torrijas: The British call it bread pudding, while Americans would probably call it "French Toast." Torrijas is a dessert recipe coming from the south of Spain during the XV century as a way to use up stale bread. Elaborate torrijas with your own hands and don´t miss out the amazing flavor!

ABOUT THELOCATION

We will visit La Boqueria Market, where we will directly meet. After the market groceries tour, we will drive home in my private car (7 seats) to my house. There we will have a hands on cooking workshop setup with tools, cutting boards and aprons for everyone. The drive will be less than 20 minutes and the house offers great views to the city Skyline.

In Sumertime we will cook and eat at the rooftop overlooking the Barcelona Skyline.

We met Yves at the La Bouqeria Market where we toured and tasted. Because the food choices are completely up to you any dietary need or preference can be accommodated. After an hour or so in the market we huddled to decide on our menu and then returned to the stalls where Yves purchased the necessary ingredients. Yves drove us to his beautiful house where he put out some snacks, opened some wine, and explained the cooking process we were about to start. With Yves' expert direction we all shared in the preparation of a delicious meal. Throughout the meal prep Yves provided a running commentary on Catalan culture and cooking. The dishes we made included an appetizer of pan con tomate topped with roasted eggplant, onions and red peppers topped with goat cheese, roasted leg of lamb with stock reduction sauce, roasted potatoes, seared calcots (a local green spring onion) & creme catalan with strawberries. Our day with Yves was a highlight of our trip. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Barcelona.

A friend recommended Yves' s cooking tour to us. My husband and I visited Barcelona with our teenage daughters last winter. We meet Yves at the Boqueria Market and together we selected a menu to cook together. During our shopping experience, Yves talked to us about all the local foods and spices. We asked him many questions and he gave us great information. We then when to his mountain side home and cooked in his small yet perfectly stocked and organized kitchen. We all had a great time chopping and stirring together. The food was delicious and Yves recently sent me the recipes he taught us to prepare. I made the wine poached pears for my friends just this last week. This local tour experience was a highlight of our vacation. We enjoyed seeing his home and enjoyed the view from his roof top patio. Great guy, great food, great experience.

What you are buying here is a taste of culture and a chance to experience it with like minded people regardless of culinary aptitude. You will spend a couple of hours shopping like a Catalan around the wonderful Boqueria market, Yves gives you a guided tour and will engage with the market traders to help answer any questions you have. As a group you then decide a menu based on the amazing choices the market offers. Yves then takes you to his fantastic house to cook the chosen menu. This is akin to a family Sunday lunch, everyone helps out to prepare the courses, the atmosphere is relaxed whilst informative and easy to enjoy for novices and experienced cooks alike. We were able to sit on Yves rooftop garden to enjoy the fruits of our labour. Our menu was Octopus with paprika dusting and pan fried razor shell with garlic and chilli infused oil. Our main was a oven roasted hake with sliced potato, tomato and onion, and to finish figs and Chocolate bombs. The whole day was relaxed, you could take what from it what you wanted and it was nice meeting the other participants and engage with them socially and culturally under the auspices of food. It was a perfect day and a big thanks to Yves for inviting us into his home .

This was one of the best experiences I had in Barcelona. Yves was absolutely lovely, really friendly and clearly very passionate about food, and it was so nice to be welcomed into his beautiful home and meet his (very cute) kids! We were a group of four, and between us we cooked several tapas dishes which we shared up on the roof terrace with stunning views of the city. Yves was so informative and knows a lot about Catalan and Spanish food, and he shared so much information with us - I feel like a tapas expert now. His kitchen was amazing, the food was delicious, and we just had so much fun. Truly lovely experience and a great way to travel deeper, meet locals, and get a more authentic, interesting experience of a culture and cuisine. Thanks so much to Yves for a fabulous evening!
