ABOUT THELOCATION

Salon located at Chez BonAppetour Host Florence's in the 8eme.

Modern day Paris 8th District is located on the Right Bank and is commonly known as Quartier de l’Elysée. The Mecca of luxury fashion and Haute Couture, Paris 8th District is laid out around the affluent Faubourg St-Honoré, the Champs-Elysées and the Palais de l’Elysée, the official residence of the president of the French Republic. Until the 18th century the modest villages of Ville-l’Evêque, Roule, Courcelles, Villiers and Monceau were the only settlements on the rural land that stretched to the west of the Louvre. The Rue du Faubourg St-Honoré was the main street of the village that had developed outside the city walls and was then bordered with few mansions. The development of Paris 8th District began in the 1770s with the opening of the Champs-Elysées and Avenue Gabriel and Rue Royale. They were followed with the transformation of Place de la Concorde, the construction of the Madeleine Church and the mansion of the Duke de Chartres in Monceau. This urbanization encouraged the aristocracy, the upper-class and the politicians to built new mansions. The Champs-Elysées were turned into a vast entertainment area where the affluent Parisians mixed happily with the night crowds in the countless balls, restaurants, theatres, open air cafes and circuses. The prestige of the district was consecrated in the first part of the 19th century with the construction of the Arc de Triomphe. Haussmann opened vast avenues in the 1860s, the Parc Monceau was developed, the Champs-Elysées embellished and the peripheral villages integrated into Paris . By the end of the 19th century the affluent Paris 8th District had become the centre of the vivid intellectual, cultural and social life of the Belle-Epoque. The establishment of countless theatres and private salons played an important role as they were the meeting point of the intelligentsia of the time where writers, artists, journalists and comedians gathered with politicians and bankers.

We had a lovely evening and would participate again. However, it would have been better if the main course had not been served during one of the vignettes. It meant that we saw the portion sizes for the people served in the main room and by the time the vignette was completed and we returned to our side room and our main course was served, the portions made us think food had run a bit short. We did see people having large portions of seconds in the main room. The lecture on Emilio du Chatelet was excellent. I never did quite understand who the second woman was portraying. The desert course and soup was excellent.
